Resumen

In 2005, during the expansion of the Brazilian State actions for cultural heritage, Sao Benedito s Brotherhood of Santarem Novo (Para / BR) became a reference of cultural militancy and the cradle of a campaign that demanded the registration of carimbo as an immaterial patrimony by the National Institute of Historic and Artistic Heritage/IPHAN. These new meanings and practices were the consequence of new relations: some of their representatives become to integrate participative forums promoted by the Ministry of Culture, taking part on an intense process of circulation and exchanges among cultural makers, both in regional and national meetings. From this case, I analyze the relations between music and politics. How is a music making produced in association with activism and public policy? The aim is to explore how carimbo, in its sounds, dance, poetry and sociability are related to the universe of public policies and understand how it is simultaneously heritage, both musical and political.
