Abstract

The concept of intangible cultural heritage (ICH) is discussed together with the potential role of tourism in safeguarding ICH of stigmatized population groups. A case study is presented for promotion and development of ICH of gypsy populations in France and Spain via a tourism policy which helps preserve culture, identity and traditions (e.g. flamenco). The self image, social identity and stereotype threat of stigmatized minorities are also examined.
