Cultural ticket as a matter of Gwangju Chilseok Gossaum and value

Gwangju Chilseok-dong Gossaum nori (Go fighting game) is the No. 33 in the State-designated Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Korea. Similar games that had been passed down in many areas of Jeonnam including Gwangju currently are passed down only in Chilseok-dong. Traditionally, Honam has had culture images of euihyang (justice home), yehyang (art home) and mihyang (taste home). These culture images have been formed by the synthesis of countless culture marks. Gossaum probably is one of the representative culture marks of euihyang, Honam.However, currently, it is passed down in Gwangju, and especially, Gwangju is a place with the most distinct euigi (spirit of justice) in Honam region. Numerous historical events including those of the generals of euibyeong (the Righteous Armies) represented by General Gyeong-myeong Go and General Deong-nyeong Kim have shown Gwangju people’s temperament that does not tolerate injustice.Gossaum is a game through which Gwangju people’s temperament is best revealed, and in this sense, we should increase its value as a cultural brand that represents Gwangju. It is considered that one of the ways to do so is to register Gossaum to the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
