Résumé

Public works have an instrumental value, regardless of the fact that many of these have since become testimony to their times and monuments to themselves. This article refers to their symbolic value as reflected by emblems, heraldry, literature, folklore and art. These form part of an intangible heritage which also include the long and demanding education of the engineers that design and direct these works and that of the technicians that build and maintain the same.
