Abstract

Water and earth make up the essential substrate, the ecological infrastructure that has made possible the development of a relatively prosperous society around an irrigated agriculture and orchard in Jaraíz (Spain), municipality of the region of La Vera in the north of the province of Caceres. The provision of new irrigated land because of the regulation of river Tiétar by the Rosarito reservoir and its channels infrastructure, makes viable the crop increasing of tobacco and paprika in the area called "vegas", radically changing Jaraíz way of life and its citizens. This has generated a culture based on these two products, which coexist in the same ecological space but where we can find some important ideological, cultural and symbolic differences.
