Indigenous Language Preservation for a Socio-political Reconciliation: Morocco as a Case Study

The current paper explores the Moroccan cultural diversity, where the indigenous ethnicities along with their languages have been undergoing an institutionalized discrimination. Such a status threatened a serious breach in the relation between the Amazigh ethnicities and the state authorities. Our hypothesis is that for a genuine and sustainable reconciliation with an oppressed cultural ethnicity to occur, there is a need for a state’s explicit recognition of their intangible heritage as a prerequisite for their socio-political inclusion. The current paper casts light on the struggle of the Amazigh movements and outlines the endeavors undertaken by the state and the civic society to publicly acknowledge the injustice inflicted upon the indigenous languages and constitutionally recognize their official status.
