The issue of typifier for intangible cultural heritage seen through Eunsan Byeolsinje ritual performed in 2016, based on which the typifier of intangible cultural heritage has been reviewed. First, the results of examining the entire process of Eunsan Byeolsinje ritual indicate that its basic framework has been kept intact but that there have been significant changes in detailed manner of its performance. This is apparently attributed to significant changes in audience and performers of Eunsan Byeolsinje ritual as well as in fundamental aspects of the event. In addition, as I pointed out the fact that higher priority is given to auxiliary events associated with Eunsan Byeolsinje ritual is a part of the changing trends and that the ritual is the intangible cultural heritage performance event led by the preservation society rather than a village folk ritual.Based on these, I have confirmed that the evaluation on Eunsan Byeolsinje ritual may be different depending on the determination on the category and criteria of the typifier. With a broad category of the typifier along with a basic flow only, Eunsan Byeolsinje ritual can be considered as anintangible cultural heritage who typifier is very well protected, but a variety of phenomena and detailed procedure of progress indicate that the typifier of Eunsan Byeolsinje ritual is broken. In conclusion, determining the category of the typifier makes a big difference. Instead of basing our determination on the outcome of intangible cultural heritage that has been recorded and reported in characters, I would like to look into the issue of typifier based on the actual performance field. Along with it, I would like to discuss the issue of typifier with various relevant issues, including locality, universality, practicality and identity taken into account. |
