The traditional culture was in the edge of disappearance due to the rapid modernity and Japanese annexation in the first half of the 20th century. It could be transmitted today when the cultural protect law was made in 1962. However, the law had a negative result that the cultural power has been made. In this paper, I will explore how the cultural power influenced in the designation of the cultural heritage and how it became cultural power in the 1960s focusing on the Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 19, Seonsori Santaryeong or the Standing Song, Mountain Song.There was a close personal relationship between the members of the cultural committee and the holder of the cultural heritage in the appointment of the cultural heritage. The members of the cutural committee were at the center of the cultural power in the 1960s and had a crucial role in the appointment of the cultural heritage. The holder of the cultural heritage of No. 19, Yi Chang-bae, had a close personal relationship with Seong Gyeong-rin, a member of the committee members, and Jang Sa-hun, the professor at Seoul National University. They worked at the The Music Bureau of the Former Royal Palace and National Center for Korean Traditional Performing Arts and had a crucial role in the promotion of traditional music through the mass media. Seong and Jang made the official report to designate Seonsori Santaryeong as the cultural heritage and Yi became the holder of the heritage.Yi Chang-bae, in fact, was the cultural power of the folksong world activated throught Cheongu Gojeon Seongak Hagwon (School of traditional Songs) which he established. Yi made the western style songs in his repertoire. He even argued that the western style songs were derived from the central style songs. In this way, the western songs, originally transmitted by the singers from western area, were taught and transmitted by Yi and other central singers. It was a serious cultural distortion made by Yi. The western singers try to correct the cultural distortion which was made by the cultural power. |
