Resumen

Over the last 70 years, traditional chamarritas dances have undergone three revitalization processes on Pico Island (Azores, Portugal). We will focus on the last one, the grassroots heritagization of the chamarritas folk dance. By analysing performative practices and associated discourses, we will show that the urge to safeguard and transmit culture is not simply a question of identity but also based on broader societal values, such as sharing and conviviality. The dialogue between the different actors involved in the chamarritas tradition reveals the existence of tensions, in a dynamic context where a variety of territorial references co-exist: regional, transnational, insular and local.
