Resumen

Beijing embroidery is originated in Beijing and well demonstrates Chinese royal culture. In 2014, Beijing embroidery was included in the list of the fourth batch of national intangible cultural heritage. The State Council issued guidelines on preserving traditional culture in 2017 (GBF[2017]No. 25), which pointed out that the country should form an inheritance system of excellent traditional culture, enhance protection of cultural heritage, rejuvenate traditional crafts to enrich cultural resources and strengthen cultural confidence. In 2018, the document (WLFYF[2018]No. 12) jointly released by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People s Republic of China put forward the Plan on Revitalizing China s Traditional Crafts and Beijing embroidery topped the list of the first batch of crafts to be revitalized. The existing literature, including Principle and Stitchings of Chinese Embroidery written by Shen Shou in the Qing Dynasty and Beijing Embroidery compiled by Hong Tao, mainly focuses on the history and techniques of Beijing embroidery. Its applications in modern fashion design are few. Research on the methodology of applying Beijing embroidery design is much less, and particularly there is a lack of literature on studying the most unique pattern design. The paper aims to fill this gap. This paper first discusses the inheritance and development of Beijing embroidery, conducts a case analysis of pattern design, which is most characteristic of Beijing embroidery, and correlates it with the features of modern clothing design. Then, the paper applies Beijing embroidery to modern fashion design practice and proves its cultural and market value. Conclusions can be drawn as follows: above all, the designer must have a profound understanding of the history and connotations of Beijing embroidery patterns before application; clothing design and structure should also be considered to convey culture, moods, and personalities. Second, the patterns should be combined with modern fashion trends with artistic design to express the unique character of customers. Third, the patterns applied should be in harmony with the whole composition and present a beauty of form. The paper probes into the historical backgrounds, history and current development of Beijing embroidery and conducts a case study on patterns of both Beijing embroidery and modern clothing. With design practice, the paper demonstrates how to apply ancient art in modern fashion design while maintaining both the charm of Beijing embroidery and the beauty of modern wear. As a result, Beijing embroidery is revitalized through the vehicle of modern clothing, and this traditional craft fulfills an artistic and market value that industrial machines cannot compare. The paper aims to provide references for the clothing industry and offer inspirations for the inheritance of Beijing embroidery and revitalization of traditional crafts.
