The purpose of this study is to establish the theory about regularity of its orders, starting positions, and the direction of bangsu steps of the the 98th important intangible cultural heritage in Korea, the periodic standing Gut(Korean traditional religious ceremony with songs and dances by shamans) to Gun-Ung gods in Gyeonggi Province. Oh Su-Bok, a Korean female shaman, was recognized as the possessor of the skills for this Gut, in October, 1990 at 66. She had performed it until 2005, and after having been bedridden for five year, she died in December, 2011 at 87. The visual references which had been recorded between 1986 and 2003 was used for this study. The fourteen4 videos were diagrammatize, analyzed, and compared with each other. The result of the analyses is as in the following. There are two kinds of orders for the Guts for Gun-Ung gods depending on tools used in the ceremonies. The first order is ①a paly with fans and bells-②a play with a monk’s robe-③a play with cow heads-④a play with a Jing(a Korean gong)-⑤a play with chickens(including a play with bows)-⑥(a paly with sleeves)-⑦two Gun-Ungs; the second order is ①a paly with a fan and a bell-②a play with a monk’s robe-③a play with a cow head-④a play with chickens(including a play with bows)-⑤(a play with sleeves)-⑥a play*Gun-Ung gods were a kind of gods who were originally heros, such as miliary generals, but died suddenly or wrongfully. They generally play a role of supervision, maintenance, protection against bad lucks, and assistance of main gods.Abstract174 무용역사기록학 제33호with a Jing-⑦two Gun-Ungs. The order of ceremonies which can be seen generally after 1993, 1994, and 2000 is the first one. There should be differences between starting positions in the standing Guts for actual religious ceremonies and stage performances; Oh had always started the Guts on the starting position for stage performances after she was recognized the skill possessor. 1986 was the only year that she started with the starting position for actual religious ceremonies by the request of Lee, Young-Woo; at that time, she stood on the South of the tables for the ceremony, and performed toward North. In the videos recorded after 1990, she always started on the center of the table and the statue of Gun-Ung and performed the ceremony toward South. However, she had generally said to distinguish between the methods for real ceremony and the method for stage performance. The visual references showed three kinds of direction of Bangsu steps: 9 for counterclockwise direction, 4 for clockwise direction, and 1 for combination. Most of videos recorded in 1990s showed the counterclockwise direction; the counterclockwise steps was seemed to be naturally performed by her procedural memory because both the mental and physical conditions of Oh in 1990s were supposed to be much healthier than in 2000s. The purpose of this study is to provide a lead to the successors who are especially confused to perform the standing Guts with right orders, starting positions, and directions of Bangsu steps after Oh’s death. |
