Gangneung Danoje Festival wasn’t designated only as a Korean Important Intangible Cultural Property No. 13 in 1967, but also as a UNESCO “Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity” in 2005. Danoje Festival has preserved Dano rituals, Dano shaman ritual, Gwanno mask drama and Nanjang(open-air market) as a precious cultural heritage of humanity. There are often many errors on the English translation of Gangneung Danoje Festival owing to the difference of cultural understanding gaps, grammaticality and lexical choices. It will be very difficult for the target text reader to understand the counter-culture text if the source and target text reader are separated by the cultural background. The translator should try to reduce the gap between two readers in order to make the target text reader understand the text easily like the source text reader. There are some ways to resolve the conflict between other backgrounds based on cultural and linguistic roots by using the additional explanation, inclusive words or phrases, borrowed words in the target language. For example, Daegwalreongsansinje, one of the source text, will be understood by adding the additional expression in the target language like Ritual performed for Daegwallyeong mountain god Kim Yusin, or by the upper leveled conception or words in the target one like the memorial service for mountain diety in Daegwallyeong. Finally, It will be very significant to make other text readers understand our cultural heritage by raising the professional translators with lots of strategies and experiences through a national policy. |
