Data modeling for digital archiving of intangible and experiential entities

There are many digital collections created by memory institutions in various cultural and social domains. This chapter aims at discussing data modeling for the digital archiving of intangible and experiential entities such as intangible cultural heritage (ICH), performing arts, and disasters. Generally, those digital collections, which are called digital archives in this chapter, are created by converting original objects to archived digital objects and organizing them for use on the Internet by current and future users. A fundamental research issue by the authors for digital archiving of those intangible and experiential entities is that the relationships between the original entities and the digitally archived objects are not very clear like that of digital archives of tangible cultural objects. This chapter first presents several important terms and concepts employed, and the models proposed by the authors in their preceding works. Then, it describes a data model for the digital archiving of intangible and experiential entities, which is a conceptual model and domain-agnostic.
