A Study on the Joint Registration Method of Intangible Cultural Heritage in South-North Korean Taekwondo

Recently, UNESCO recommends multi-national registration if cultural heritage is found in many countries. As a result, it is possible that Taekwondo, which is a common heritage of the two Koreas, will be listed jointly. However, the domestic Taekwondo community still lacks under debate on the issue. The study will discuss three themes at the level of providing materials for the joint registration of the inter-Korean Taekwondo. The first is the conditions and trends in UNESCO s intangible cultural heritage. Second, it is the cultural and social significance of the inter-Korean Taekwondo. Third, it is a task by the stages of inter-Korean Taekwondo for the joint entry of UNESCO. In particular, the study approaches North-South conflicts over Taekwondo from a shared perspective. The shows that the North and South Taekwondo met the requirements for UNESCO s application for registration. However, in accordance with UNESCO s policy of emphasizing the cooperative process of the relevant community, exchanges between the two Koreas should be activated.
