Abstract |
The main purpose of this research is to investigate the efficacy of current policies implemented by the provincial government of Jeju island. After the inscription of ‘Culture of Jeju Haenyeo’ on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, the local government has developed a variety of support policies to enhance the quality of Jeju Haenyeo by providing multiple funding. However, most of the policies remain in financial support and are not sufficient for fostering the next generation of women divers. The population of established women divers is in its declining years. About 90\% of haenyeos are currently in their 70s or 80s, while the number of the youth population is minimal. In order to maintain the viability of ‘Culture of Jeju Haenyeo,’ effectual transmission policy to foster the next generation haenyeo must be established. |
