@article{3828, author = {Jose Izquierdo König}, title = {Chinese dances: historical, institutional and aesthetic issues around a declaration of intangible heritage UNESCO}, abstract = {On 26th November 2014, UNESCO inscribed the ritual practice called "Baile Chino", typical of northern and central Chile, on to its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This article reflects on this inscription and practice from a documentary, rather than ethnographic, perspective. The Baile Chino was never included as part of institutionalized notions of folklore in Chile during the twentieth century, and it was a combination of research and institutional coincidences that led to its rise in profile and visibility in the first decade of this century, making it the first surprise entry on the UNESCO list for Chile. The hypothesis of this article is that it was considerations over the dance s historicity, alongside the relationship of specific researchers to this practice, which led it to be nominated. It is also argued that this process reflects changes, problems and debates in Chile over recent decades surrounding the shift from ideas of institutionalized "folklore" to the concept of "heritage".}, year = {2018}, journal = {Trans-Revista Transcultural de Música}, volume = {21-22}, issn = {1697-0101}, }
