TY - JOUR AU - Teahan Hong AB - The purpose of this study is to examine the directivity of a national research project onintangible heritages (Comprehensive Survey of the Korean Intangible Heritage) according tothe new law system (Act on Safeguarding and Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritage) thathas taken effect in 2016. The subjects of this study are not all areas included in it but mainlyshamanistic rituals and Buddhist rituals. This author suggests how to improve it as follows:first, it is necessary to set its direction based on the current status of national, and municipaland provincial intangible cultural heritage. More examination should be done to figure outwhich needs to receive more attention between regionality and nationality. Second, thenew law has extended the subjects that can be designated as intangible cultural heritage.Because “usual” intangible heritage elements can also be designated as intangible culturalheritage, we should consider how to deal with the “usualness.” Third, the subjects oftransmissions are diversified; hence, how to establish identity is important. Fourth, theareas of intangible cultural heritage have been extended, so we should consider how to setup the center of transmitting intangible cultural heritage. Fifth, intangible heritage existsin a complex way. Therefore, we need to consider how to harmonize partiality with totality.Sixth, it is needed to consider the direction of research paying attention to the original andthe model, one of the recently arising issues. These six points suggested here are aboutthe directivity of research in consideration of the new law system. Also, based on that, thisresearcher suggests the case of Seoul Gutdang and proposes the directivity of research onintangible heritage. Concerning Buddhism, this author suggests everyday life and seasonalcustoms in each year to examine the directivity in detail. Furthermore, it is necessary toconsider seriously who should be in charge of the national research project on intangibleheritage to be launched from next year: National Intangible Heritage Center or anotherexternal institution. We are highly expecting the initiation of the national research project onintangible heritage. We all hope that the will be conducted as desired.
