TY - JOUR AU - Na Soo AB - A lot of folklorists have made a contribution to the growth and development of intangiblecultural properties until now. And the National Folk Arts Contest which began in 1958 did notonly stay at becoming a dynamic force for transmission of folk culture and arts by findingand reproducing them but also obtain good results that many works of art were designatedas intangible cultural properties. However, intangible cultural properties and folklore mustbe approached in other contexts even though they have similar objects. Nevertheless, anydifferentiation between both of them never clearly have been discussed until now. This studytried to examine differences between folklore and intangible cultural properties. Before thisdiscussion, identity and relativity of tangible and intangible cultural properties and identityand correlation between folklore and intangible cultural properties were examined. Based onthese, the relationship and distance between intangible cultural properties and folklore werecalculated as follows:1. Folklore is the embodiment of natural culture, while intangible cultural properties are theartificial selection of culture.2. Folklore is made under the necessity of ordinary life, but intangible cultural properties aredesignated under the necessity of nations.3. Folklore is conceptual variability, but intangible cultural properties have a very rigid senseof their identity.4. Folklore is epistemologically approached, while intangible cultural properties are based onthe theory of value.5. Folklore deals with past cultures as its central subjects, but intangible cultural propertiesregard the lay of the land(實狀) as important.6. Folklore is called self-generated cultures of popular groups, but for intangible culturalproperties, nations which are the impersonalized groups are main agents and owners andtherefore, they are the subjects which must be maintained and supported by nations withresponsibility.In conclusion, identity and management of intangible cultural properties which aredifferentiated from folklore were discussed.
