Despite of the practices and implications of new traditions in Socotra, Socotri people still preserve some of their indigenous lifestyles. Therefore, this study explores the social, political, and economic, factors which helped in preserving the Socotri intangible traditions. It also investigates how the Socotris deal with the new traditions that conquered their society. A qualitative design is obtained to collect data from 20 Socotris. The sample is selected purposefully. It includes people who have concerns with and interests in the Socotri culture and traditions. Data were analyzed qualitatively. Results revealed that Socotris still practice some of their ancestors’ crafts as a source of income, like shepherding, fishing, and growing palm trees. Furthermore, the political factors include the authorities from the old sultanates’ urge to preserve the Socotri traditions. Some considered the Socotri language helps preserve their traditions. Socotris differ in accepting the intrusive traditions, elders refuse while the youngers accept them. Moreover, the city residents accept whereas the villagers do not accept the new traditions. Finally, Socotris still practice the traditions of guests’ hospitality, visiting one another, collecting animals to pray for God when rain is lacking, and supporting grooms with sheep in their marriage. On the contrary, practicing witchcraft, getting girls to marry without their knowledge, and women’s interactions with foreigners are among the lost traditions. The study opens many horizons for specialists in the Socotri traditions to investigate the findings and for authorities to consolidate the factors that contribute to saving the Socotri tradition from being endangered. |
