TY - JOUR AU - Joo Young Jang AB - Chinese paper-cutting art has Chinese traditional culture and unique artistic expression. Combining paper-cutting art with modern design can meet the demand for diversity and differentiation of design in the globalized market, especially the design of movie posters which have already appeared the problem of homogeneity of expressions. For further development, the art of paper-cutting is needed to help at multiple levels of culture and art, but the research related to the application of paper-cutting art in the development of movie poster design is imperfect. Therefore, this study takes movie posters with applied paper-cutting art elements as the research object. The purpose of the study is to explore the key elements of paper-cut art that drive the development of film posters and the evolutionary approach to the sustainability of paper-cut art in modern design. The contents and results of this study are as follows: (1) based on literature research, the three major elements of the development trend of movie posters are cultural, artistic, and digital; (2) combined with expert interviews to determine the seven elements of paper-cut art in movie posters: identity, pattern, symbolism, expression technique, color, composition, and interest, and the performance of paper-cutting art elements in the development of movie posters; (3) To make a case study model based on this; (4) To select the series of paper-cut art movie posters released in China from 2015 to 2020 with the highest box office as the case study object and analyze and deduce the elements of paper-cut in the development of movie poster design. Finally, it is concluded that with the development of film poster design, the core elements of paper-cutting art are evolving, integrating multicultural elements, expanding the scope of cultural expression, making the paper-cutting art expression then diversified development, by absorbing more modern design elements and expression techniques, providing rich design materials for the digital design of film posters, meeting the modern people’s diversified and cross-border aesthetic needs. It is hoped that the findings of this study will serve as a basic source for research on the flexible application of traditional Chinese art in the development of modern design.
