TY - JOUR AU - Cho Sungsil AB - This paper explores the transmission, changes and contemporary meanings of traditional crafts focusing on the cases of traditional brush-making craftsmanship. For this purpose, I had interviews with brush-making craftsmen(masters) residing in the areas of Jeonju and Gimje, Jeonbuk province, South Korea. I attempt to examine how the traditional knowledge of brush making have been passed down and undergone changes by collecting their life-history. In addition, using the method of participant observation for recording the whole process of brush-making I endeavor to unveil the traits of the making process and the attributes of the brush craftsmen’s traditional knowledge. In brush-making, a wise selection of materials is quite significant as in other fields of traditional crafts. This study deals with the artisans’ traditional knowledge of not only the processes and methods of the brush-making but also their choices of materials. This type of knowledge has been handed down to the craftsmen from their ancestors on the one hand and has been acquired by themselves through trials and errors on the other hand. Probing the whole process of brush-making, I delineate how the traditional knowledge that the brush craftsmen exert have undergone transmission, changes, and extinction within the socio-cultural context furthermore from holistic and systematic perspectives. I investigate the meanings of both continuity and changes of traditional craftsmanship in contemporary scene.
