TY - JOUR AU - Lee Hyunjoo AB - The purpose of this study was to suggest a research direction and value of intangible Buddhist cultural heritages found in Busan, which occupy the biggest part of the city’s intangible cultural assets.Since the「Intangible Cultural Property Act」was legislated in 2016, the Cultural Heritage Administration or local governments have been researching intangible cultural assets in a separate way. However, meanwhile, not any separate investigation of intangible Buddhist cultural heritages has been made in Korea. This is also the case for Busan that has its own long history related to Buddhism so the city has a lot of intangible Buddhist cultural heritages inside.A well-organized research of intangible Buddhist cultural heritages in Busan requires the following three conditions to be met. One is to accept the UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage, the Cultural Heritage Protection Act, the Intangible Cultural Property Act and the definition and classification systems stipulated in the Decree of Intangible Buddhist Cultural Heritage. The next is to set up the direction in which intangible Buddhist cultural heritages researched here is sorted out and described provided the unique characteristics of such intangible cultural assets are taken into serious consideration. And the last condition is to make sure that the research is made based on the very conception of subjects that transmit intangible Buddhist cultural heritages by reflecting characteristics of those intangible cultural properties. In the discussion of its range and methods, above all, this study suggested the need to meet a prerequisite, that is, performing a total survey of intangible Buddhist cultural heritages in Busan, whether being still transmitted or not. In association, the study also suggested, it’s inevitable that researchers with different expertises make interdisciplinary cooperation and that the Buddhist circles and local self-governing bodies of the city collaborate with each other. This study made some suggestions concerning a well-organized investigation of intangible Buddhist cultural heritages in Busan. If implemented, expectedly, the suggestions would have some effects as follows. First, very meaningfully, areas that should be focused on in researching intangible Buddhist cultural heritages become clarified, in contrast to the fact that there has so far been no attempt by the academic or Buddhist circles to categorize those inheritage, whether largely or more specifically. Second, it becomes possible with the frameworks, which this study set up to sort out and examine intangible Buddhist cultural heritages in Busan, to get any and all information about those heritages in the city, expectedly contributing to developing a future direction of research that would be made deeper and in mid- and long-term. Third, the outcomes of this study provide a good example of methods using which any other regions than Busan or any Buddhist orders could come into research intangible Buddhist cultural heritages that they have. In doing so, it would probably reveal any and all things about intangible Buddhist cultural heritages that exist across Korea. This would also help make clearer where intangible Buddhist cultural heritages of Busan’s own are positioned in terms of status and how much they are sustainably valuable.
