The objective of this study is to highlight the possibility of applying traditional patterns to modern designs and to enhance their added values and cultural values in recognition of the importance of research on traditional patterns. The scope of this study covers theoretical investigation on traditional patterns and traditional pomegranate patterns particularly embodied on fabrics, metals, and ceramics. To that end, this study examines characteristics of blue and white porcelains in the late Joseon Dynasty and interprets pomegranate patterns on such blue and white porcelains in a modern perspective, and then designs are suggested based on the results.Study methods include the following: Theoretical investigation was conducted on traditional patterns, traditional patterns including pomegranate patterns, and pomegranate patterns in traditional handicrafts in reference to books, web sites, and papers. Pictorial characteristics of such pomegranate patterns on blue and white porcelains were derived, and textile patterns were developed based on such pomegranate patterns in use of Adobe Photoshop for structuring and coloring with water colors. The result shows that traditional patterns have been developed as a symbol that combines national thoughts, beliefs, and shamanistic thoughts. Traditional pomegranate patterns were popular in the late Joseon Dynasty particularly for their meaning of fecundity.Pomegranate patterns embodied in woven textiles of traditional fabrics broke from uniform and simple arrangements as time passed. Pomegranate patterns expressed with embroidery techniques were looked natural. Glit pomegranate patterns represent the flat design illustrated on the splendid material of gold.pomegranate patterns on traditional metalwork feature the semi three-dimensional and linear expressions. When it comes to ceramic art, pomegranate patterns of inlaid celadon porcelains feature the regular arrangement and simplified design. Blue and white porcelains apply painting techniques with the brush-touch of blue color and gradation of light and shade. This study suggests designs based on such painting characteristics of pomegranate patterns on blue and white porcelains. 3 blue and white porcelains were selected, and were developed with the pomegranate patterns expressed on these porcelains as the motif. Textile pattern designs are presented to be applied to 6 female clothes. The colorway that applies a blue tone is presented along with a gray tone in a way that reinterprets the blue color sensibility of blue and white porcelains. This study is of significance in that it presents a culturally meaningful, new design of patterns taking over our cultural heritage in the modern life and reflecting modern feelings rather than being excessively obsessed to the past.
