Herman00aManagement of sustainable development of cultural tourism in Medimurje County.  a83-873 aTechnology progress, economic development and modernization of society all lead to the changes which affect tourism tendencies as well as the overall tourism development, from mass tourism to special interests tourism. Among the latter, cultural tourism has increasingly gained in importance. Development of cultural tourism is based on tangible and intangible cultural heritage and cultural events for tourism promotion. There are numerous resources for the development of cultural tourism in the Medimurje County, however the analysis of current developments has shown that these resources are insufficiently used for tourism purposes. By utilizing tangible and intangible cultural heritage in tourism, that is, by linking culture industry and tourism, Medimurje gets ample opportunities for becoming a competitive cultural tourism destination in continental Croatia. Development and promotion of cultural tourism entails sustainable development. This means that tourism should not lead to destruction of cultural property, it only has to contribute to the protection and preservation of tangible and intangible cultural heritage since only preserved and quality cultural tourism product can be competitive in the tourism market. Cultural tourism in the Medimurje County can be managed by harmonized principles of the sustainable development: environmental, socio-cultural, technological and economic principles which must be incorporated in all County development plans.
