Abstract

Taekwondo intends to be recognized as a UNESCO heritage as a national intangible cultural property. therefore, this study aims to confirm the meaning of intangible cultural heritage of Taekwondo by referring to preceding research and related systems. In order to be recognized as a national intangible cultural property, it is necessary to obtain a score higher than the standard score in the evaluation of the cultural heritage committee. the items can be largely centered on history, scholarship, art and technology, representativeness, continuity of intangible cultural properties, and vitalization of transmission. in history, the period since 1944 when the early Taekwondo Dojo was formed is trusted. in the academic field, it is expected to receive excellent evaluations given government policy support, popular culture awareness, and research results. in the art and technology fields, Taekwondo showed an original skill training system, but it is necessary to further discover the basics of Taekwondo as a Korean martial art, and it will receive excellent evaluation if a supplementary plan for commercialization of Taekwondo is prepared. Taekwondo history is evaluated to be shorter than other cultural assets. however, if we look at the development process of Taekwondo, the evaluation of representativeness to traditional culture would be positive. since Taekwondo history is less than 100 years old, it can be underestimated in sustainability. however, Taekwondo can overcome the negative logic that it has been sported due to the many results of the developed domestic and foreign countries, and get a good evaluation in group cultural identity, diversity and creativity. the frequency and scope of Taekwondo are superior to other martial arts in terms of sustainability, and the activation of tradition can secure high grade in the same context. as a result, the evaluation of the designation of taekwondo intangible cultural properties can secure the best grade, but controversy may arise in the originality, historicity, and uniqueness of the tradition. the controversy over the karate acceptance and the lack of Korean martial arts traces may lead to a sharp conflict between affirmations and negatives. if Taekwondo is designated as intangible cultural property, it should proceed in the order of sport, training organization, and training skill.
