TY - JOUR AU - Hong Teahan AB - This article observes the distinctiveness of the Eosan group. The Eosan Group is a group that leads in Buddhist rituals and interest in the group itself is growing under the newly enacted Act on the Preservation and Promotion of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This article raised the points that 1) the Eosan group is constructing its own historical character through a genealogy, 2) it is an agent that passes down various forms of traditional knowledge, and 3) it is a key element that displays the regionality of Buddhist rituals. Intangible heritage values based on the characteristics of the Eosan group should be recognized and designated as intangible cultural assets. This provides recognition of it as an agent that passes down traditional knowledge of newly expanded intangible cultural asset-specifying categories and it signifies an attempt to recognize a transmission group, separately from the recognition of individuals such as holders and holding organizations as the agents of intangible cultural asset transmission. Traditional knowledge is possessed by individuals but individuals cannot break away from organizations that are their bases of livelihood and living. Various forms of traditional knowledge of the seaside may be possessed by a fisherman but it is based on the fishing village that is their town. Therefore, while the traditional knowledge of the seaside may recognize the members or groups of fishing villages, at present, traditional knowledge is not based on the characteristics of groups as they are falling behind mechanization and digitization. On the other hand, the Eosan group, which passes down Buddhist rituals, is an agent of the transmission of traditional knowledge and it is still based on unique group characteristics. Therefore, it is becoming a firm agent of traditional knowledge transmission and new values must be recognized. M1 - 2 N2 - This article observes the distinctiveness of the Eosan group.
